Southern Maine Youth Hockey
Beginning Hockey - Tier II - Tier III - Tier IV
Who we are:
Southern Maine Youth Hockey Association is entering its 16th season as a non-profit USA Hockey affiliate. We provide youth hockey instruction, practice and game participation, and the overall "hockey experience" to boys and girls. Southern Maine Youth Hockey is open to hockey players from any Southern Maine community. While all players in the area can participate, our program mainly serves young skaters from the towns of Buxton, Gorham, Hollis, Limington, Saco, Scarborough, Standish, Windham and Westbrook. In 2013, The Southern Maine Breakers and Huskies Youth Hockey joined forces and become one group, Southern Maine Youth Hockey. This merger has made Southern Maine Youth Hockey one the fastest growing youth hockey programs in the State of Maine. Our home rinks are the USM Ice Arena in Gorham where our skaters have the benefit of the only Olympic sized sheet of ice in Maine, and William B. Troubh Ice Arena, in Portland. We offer beginning hockey, Tier II, III and IV hockey at all skill levels that benefit several hundred participants from age 4 through 18. Our girls hockey program established five years ago will play here in Maine but has also joined the Middlesex Yankee Conference Girls League. For all teams we strive for each player to have 70 ice touches and 16 off- ice training sessions during the regular session from October to March.
The "goal" of Southern Maine Youth Hockey is to promote and develop youth ice hockey in Maine. We teach the skating and stick handling skills, the positions and game play, and the rules of hockey that young ice skaters need to become young hockey players. We emphasize good sportsmanship among skaters, parents, and coaches, whether winning or losing. Since hockey is a contact sport at the Pee Wee level and above, we make safety our highest priority at all levels of instruction.
